Customer Review: A Great Album by Gregg Nestor
The selections chosen, arranged and recorded by here for the first time bridge the gap between the world of the classic guitar and that of the popular world and Broadway. About

The guitar music of Latin America is as rich and varied as the influences that have inspired it. Latin history is interwoven with the beauty and nuance of two predominant languages – Spanish and Portuguese – as well as hundreds of regional cultures that have provided both its artistic variety and vitality. Nowhere is this more manifest than in its music.
Gregg Nestor takes us on a musical journey to a number of Latin American points of interest, amply demonstrating why this repertoire is a treasure for classical guitarists.

About

Henry Mancini gave his autobiography, published by Contemporary Books of Chicago in 1989, the title Did They Mention the Music? , voicing the anxiety common to all composers for motion pictures. For no matter the long experience and the success, composers in this genre always wonder if what has been written for the screen will be noticed enough for anyone to comment upon it. After all, the art of scoring is largely subliminal – the music is meant to be felt rather than heard. However, in the case of Henry Mancini, it is an anxiety that applies less to him than to anyone who has ever written music for the screen. Even people who hardly ever notice music in the movies notice Mancini – in fact his is probably the dominant name that comes to the mind of most people when asked to name a film composer. The reasons for Mancini’s immediate identity go far beyond his skill scoring films. What he has written has not only fulfilled the functions of scoring – the subtle process whereby a film is given another dramatic and emotional dimension – but so much of what he has produced has had a lasting appeal. He is a man gifted with that most sublime of musical gifts – melody, along with the ability to craft his creations so that they touch the listener in a direct manner.

About

The guitar duo tradition stretches back to the early nineteenth century when Fernando Sor wrote duets to perform with Dionisio Aguado. Other composer/performers of this period such as Mauro Giuliani and Fernando Carulli also published fine works for two guitars. In the twentieth century various distinguished duos established an international reputation, the most eminent being the Presti-Lagoya partnership who set new standards in both technique and interpretation.

The duo is a versatile medium capable of encompassing a more complex repertoire than a single guitar. In particular the duo lends itself to imaginative arrangements from a wide variety of sources, including the pianoforte and even orchestral scores. If, as Segovia maintained, the solo instrument is ‘a miniature orchestra in itself’, it could be argued that two guitars double the instrument’s tonal and interpretative resources. The music on this recording demonstrates the duo’s capacity to present a wide range of transcriptions with authority, sensitive musicianship, and virtuosity.

About

The guitar has long been associated with folk music and composers over the centuries have been indebted to folk songs. One only has to think of Schubert, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Dvorak, Vaughn Williams, Rodrigo, etc. to realise the extent of this umbilical relationship between so called “art” music and the folkloric. On this recording the two cultural streams, that of folk and the other of the concert hall, are juxtaposed, some of the pieces being straightforwardly “folk”, the rest examples of how contemporary composers have enthusiastically used the resources of their national heritage.

About

Nowadays the classical guitar is truly international with performers and composers from around the world being involved in the development of its repertoire. Yet at the heart of the instrument’s appeal, Spanish music continues to fascinate players and public. In particular, the many pieces written for Andres Segovia by Iberian composers inspire a charismatic enchantment. Yet even beyond the orbit of Maestro Segovia’s creative presence, there is a hinterland of Spanish works equally imaginative and alluring.
